Abstract

To evaluate the influence of hyperthyroidism on bone mineral density (BMD), we measured BMD in 70 female patients with hyperthyroidism using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DE-XA). BMD was measured in lumbar vertebrae(L2-4). BMD was lower in
the
hyperthyroidism patients compared with normal women and a decrease of the BMD was more marked in the premenopausal (p<0.01) than in the postmenopausal women. BMD showed a marked decrease for 10 years after menopause and the total loss of BMD for
10
years after menopause was approximately 20.5%. This finding suggests that the loss of BMD occur rapidly within 10 years after menopause in the patients with hyperthyroidism. We found highly significant correlations of BMD with weight and years
since
menopause (YSM) (r=0.455, p=0.0061;r=-0.688, p=0.0002) in the patients with hyperthyroidism. These results suggest that BMD is decreased in patients with hyperthyroidism, and age YSM appear to be risk factors for decreased BMD.
